Peter Kay - Manchester Arena

Peter Kay remembers his time in working as a steward in the Manchester Arena he later made this into an episode from the Peter Kay thing

Probably my favourite episode in the Peter Kay thing was his experience working in the new Manchester Arena. Its hard to put your finger on why its so funny but the 2 people in charge of training were perfect comedy material. In fact Peter Kay remembers writing down exactly what they were saying in a training meeting, noting that it was classic comedy material. In a delightful ironic twist they commended Peter for his note taking. They tried hard to be funny, but failed miserably in their attempt or at least they failed in the sense people were not so much laughing at their jokes but at their crassness. To give an example of their dialogue

“you’ve been warned.” Sean continued. “Don’t come running to us when you’ve had your legs blown off, Chris?”

They would always end a sentence by passing over to the other guy as if they were a double act like Morecambe and Wise. Something like.

“thanks Sean. Interesting point”

“People might think we are being over the top when we talk about the dangers of flash photography but we’ve seen the dangers first-hand, haven’t we, Sean?”

They proceeded to give an elaborate account of how in one concert Elton John was thrown off track completely by a flash photographer.”

One scene that was particularly funny was during a mock fire drill. There is no audience but all the stewards have been instructed to make the “imaginary” audience leave. Peter Kay is doing the job of shepherding the imaginary people out of the building. This generates the wrath of Sean or Chris. Peter Kay responds with his typical sarcastic disbelief saying how can they know he’s not doing job when there’s no one there. Sean or Chris then shout out something like.

“there’s a child on 5th row burning to death, what you’re going to do about it?”
