In 2000 the UCI decided to bring in a radical change to the rules regarding the World Hour Record. They decided that any future attempts would have to use the same technology as the Mercks era, e.g. no tri bars, no disc wheels e.t.c. THis explains the huge drop in distance achieved by Christ Boardman.
